Interview: The Chronicle Australia Australian Tour and ABC Release

Written by Hannah King, Tuesday 4th October 2016

INTERNATIONAL pianist Jayson Gillham hails from Dalby and is coming home to kick off his Australian tour.

Mr Gillham now lives in London and has gained a reputation for his compelling and elegant performances.

He performs with the world’s leading orchestras and conductors with recent and future highlights including concerto performances with London Philharmonic, Sydney Symphony, Vladimir Ashkenazy and Melbourne Symphony.

As a keen recitalist he has also performed at the world’s leading venues including Wigmore Hall in London, Louvre Auditorium in Paris, City Recital Hall Angel Place in Sydney and Melbourne Recital Centre.

Mr Gillham is touring Australia this October and November, starting at the Queensland Performing Arts Centre in Brisbane.

“The tour begins in my home state of Queensland, with a recital for the Medici Series at QPAC. I’ll be performing works my Bach, Handel, Beethoven, Liszt and Chopin,” he said.

“Music is one of the greatest gifts we have in this world.

“It can convey all emotions without having to spell it out in language, so we feel it deeper than language and it touches us without always knowing why.

“Every performance is different, a unique experience, whether we are playing new music or a Beethoven sonata that has been played for 200 years.”

Mr Gillham is also releasing an album this week to coincide with his tour.

Bach Schubert Chopin will be released on Friday.

“Recording this album has been like a dream come true,” he said.

“I basically chose all the repertoire that you will hear on the disc, and I chose the recording engineer, producer who has worked on some of the most beautifully recorded piano music of recent times.

“I am so lucky that he agreed to work with me.

“This necessitated recording the album in Germany and we found a wonderful hall in a small town called Neumarkt.

“Being in a quiet part of the world definitely helps when you are trying to eliminate outside sound when making a recording.”
